A CGM is a revolutionary device that continuously tracks your glucose levels, providing you and your doctor with the data needed to manage diabetes with greater confidence and freedom than ever before.

At Aeroflow Diabetes, we specialize in helping you navigate your insurance to get a continuous glucose monitor at little to no cost. Let us handle the paperwork so you can focus on your health.

What is a CGM?

Continuous Glucose Monitors are the ADA-recommended way to track your glucose levels without the interruptions of traditional blood glucose meters. Instead of measuring glucose from your blood with a finger stick, a CGM device uses a tiny sensor to measure glucose in the interstitial fluid just under your skin.

This method provides a constant stream of data, painting a full picture of how your glucose levels change over time. You can see how your body reacts to food, exercise, medication, and stress in real-time. A complete continuous glucose monitoring system has three main parts:

The Sensor: A small, water-resistant CGM sensor that reaches just beneath your skin (usually on the arm or abdomen). It has a tiny, flexible filament that sits just below the skin's surface.

The Transmitter: This sits on top of the sensor (the part you see) and wirelessly sends glucose data to your receiver.

The Receiver: This is a dedicated handheld reader that displays your glucose readings, trend data, and alerts. Patients can also use the apps associated with their CGM to read their data.

The Benefits of Using a CGM

Switching to a continuous blood glucose monitor can be a life-changing decision for managing diabetes. The benefits go far beyond simply reducing finger sticks.

See the Full Picture: Get 24/7 data that shows not just where your glucose is, but where it's heading and how fast. Trend arrows on your CGM help you act proactively.

Reduce Hypoglycemia: Customizable alarms can alert you when your glucose levels begin to drop too low or rise too high, helping you prevent dangerous events before they occur.

Make Informed Decisions: See exactly how a meal or workout affects your glucose levels, allowing you to make smarter, personalized decisions about your health.

Improve A1C: Studies show that people using CGM devices often have better glycemic control and can achieve a lower A1C.

Greater Peace of Mind: Enjoy the confidence that comes with knowing you have a reliable blood glucose monitor watching out for you, whether you’re asleep, at work, or exercising.

Who is a Candidate for a CGM?

While many people with diabetes can benefit from a continuous glucose monitoring device, they are especially helpful for individuals who:

  • Have type 1 diabetes.

  • Have type 2 diabetes and use insulin daily.

  • Experience frequent low glucose (hypoglycemia).

  • Have "hypoglycemic unawareness" (can't feel when their glucose is low).

  • Are a child or a teen with diabetes.

  • Want more data to fine-tune their diabetes management.

  • Your doctor can help you determine if a CGM system is the right choice for your treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions About Continuous Glucose Monitoring

How does a CGM work?

A CGM works by using a small sensor inserted just under your skin to test the glucose in the interstitial fluid. A transmitter attached to the sensor then sends these readings wirelessly to a reader or smart device. This gives you 24/7 insight into your glucose levels and trend directions, something a blood glucose meter can't do.

How is a continuous glucose monitor inserted?

Each CGM comes with a simple, disposable applicator. You just press the applicator against your skin (usually the back of the arm or abdomen), and it inserts a tiny, flexible filament just below the surface in a fraction of a second. Most users report it’s surprisingly quick and painless.

Is a CGM more accurate than a fingerstick?

While fingersticks measure glucose directly from your blood, a CGM measures it from the fluid between your cells, which can have a slight lag. However, modern CGM systems are extremely accurate for managing diabetes and showing trends. Your doctor may still recommend an occasional fingerstick to calibrate your device or to confirm a reading if you feel your symptoms don't match your CGM data.

How much does a continuous glucose monitor cost?

The out-of-pocket cost of a continuous glucose monitor depends almost entirely on your insurance plan. The great news is that most insurance providers, including Medicare, now provide excellent coverage for CGMs. At Aeroflow Diabetes, we determine your exact coverage and help you obtain your CGM at the lowest possible cost.

Can I buy a CGM directly?

Most CGM devices are considered medical equipment and require a prescription from your doctor. While you can't just buy a medical-grade CGM off the shelf, the process to qualify for and obtain a CGM is straightforward with Aeroflow Diabetes. Simply fill out our quick eligibility form, and we'll handle the rest—from obtaining your prescription to verifying insurance and shipping your supplies directly to your door.

Does Medicare cover CGMs if I’m not on insulin?

This is a great question, as coverage rules have recently changed. As of 2023, Medicare has expanded its guidelines. Now, many people with type 2 diabetes who are not on insulin may be eligible for CGM coverage if they have a documented history of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Because the rules can be complex, the easiest way to know for sure is to let our specialists check your specific Medicare plan for you.
